The music of Tenth Planet is best described as melodic alternative rock. All vain attempts at pigeon-holing aside, this Toronto-based band's individual influences are vastly diverse and combine in way that must be heard to be fathomed. Free of the shackles of genre though joyously bound to the strictures of classic song-writing, Tenth Planet creates globally accessible music bursting with intensity, passion and unique sound in a tradition set forth by such classification-defying bands as U2, Alice in Chains and Radiohead. Setting Tenth Planet apart from even these powerhouse acts is their fully consistent delivery of sweetly violent and technically thrilling guitar rock fused with fierce melodies and universal stories of aching ferocity.
The band took root in 1998 and with Robert Strauss, produced their self-titled EP in 2000. The single "Slash of Blue," was selected as the lead-off track for the Indieblast Vol. 4 compilation and received airplay across two oceans. In June of 2003, the song "We are the Cause of Everything" was the winner of Umbrella Music's "Next Level" contest. In May 2004 Tenth Planet was selected to be one of five finalists (recent finalists include the Trews, the Miniatures and Finger Eleven) for 97.7 HTZ FM's Rocksearch 2004. By the end of 2004, the band had sold two thousand copies of the fully independent "Retro Has No Future" EP and had also found a new producer in The Tea Party's Jeff Martin, who helped the band produce their acclaimed 2005 album,"The Prophet Curse".
In September 2006 the band went on their first tour of Europe. It was a rousing success, having played dates in Holland, Germany, Belgium and England. The highlight of the tour was playing for 12 000 at the Breda Barst Festival, in Breda Holland. What makes the whole thing even more unbelievable is the fact that the band had no record deal and label support in Europe, yet were able to make the tour successful due to overwhelming demand via international online cd sales via their website and digital downloads like itunes.
In January 2007, the band was hand selected by Black Sabbath guitarist and founding member Tony Iommi as one of the finalists for his international Planet Rock Search band competition, the only North American band to be selected!
In September 2007, almost a year to the day of their first trip overseas, Tenth Planet returned for their second tour of Europe. This time, it was a special treat as Guitarist Brian Paul, Drummer Mauro Scatozza and Vocalist Martin Ouellette did full on acoustic performances of their album The Prophet Curse, plus tracks off their forthcoming CD.
The band just completed an exciting two week stint with Jeff Martin at Orange Lounge Studios in Toronto. Martin, who produced the band's critically acclaimed and award winning 2005 album The Prophet Curse, also takes full production credits on the new album, as well as co-writing the album closer "Line in the Sand". In a recent interview, Jeff commented on the band by saying, "They're really cool, they sound like a mix between The Tea Party and U2." In December the band will be heading over to Ireland to complete work on their new album.
With songs of universal impact, written and performed with epic scope and otherwordly skill, Tenth Planet has pan-Atlantic critics climbing over each other in their rush toward rare consensus.
