The only thing sexier than the chemistry between a great rock singer and his smokin lead guitar player is the chemistry between a great rock singer and her smokin female lead guitar player... and with the arrival of The Red Light Riot, there's a new, undeniable swagger in town. Lidia Vila of Torontoindie.com proclaims:
"Donna is the new guitar queen! Francine is an awesome sight to behold with blasting vocals and stage presence!"
With heavy guitar riffs and soaring, ballsy vocals, Francine Scala and Donna Grantis, the songwriting core of RLR, don't need to tell you who's on their list of influences. It's clear that these two cut their musical teeth on tunes by the original bad boys of rock and roll: Robert (Plant) & Jimmy (Page), Axl (Rose) & Slash, and Steven (Tyler) & Joe (Perry). At the same time, the duo adds to their original rock repertoire a dynamic which is uniquely their own.
Friends since grade school, self-proclaimed musical soul mates Francine and Donna have been performing together since their early teens. As a songwriting duo, they have been recognized and supported by both the Ontario Arts Council and F.A.C.T.O.R. (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent On Records). They play the shit out of their instruments, just ask the growing legion of fans who have been coming out in droves to see them strut their stuff at Toronto rock haunts the Horseshoe, the Bovine and the Rivoli.
In early 2006, Francine & Donna, along with band mates Dave McMillan (bass) and Kevin Mendes (drums), headed to The Shed Studios in Hillsburgh to begin work on their long-awaited debut album. At the helm was none other than former Toronto guitarist, producer Brian Allen and mastering engineer, Joao Carvalho (Sam Roberts, By Divine Right, Pilate). The band officially launched the release of their album, titled War & Ribbons of Euphoria, on January 19th, 2007 by playing a sold out show at the iconic El Mocambo.
