CMW 2009 Canadian Music Week 2009 - A week in review

From grizzled veterans to novice newbies, 500 bands descended upon the city for this year’s Canadian Music Week.  While maneuvering through the minefield that is the CMW schedule, Toronto Music Scene was able to see only a sample of what CMW had to offer.  Here are some of the highlights.

Silenced Concert Series Sounds Off at the Phoenix

Four Toronto indie alternative rock bands took over the Phoenix Concert Theatre February 19 and performed the first of a series of concerts entitled Silenced. Each of the concerts in the series will take on a different music genre, the first being rock. Captive Groves set this tone for the night, as they were the first to hit the stage. Their set evolved from the soothing accompaniment of a bongo, sitar and tambourine melody to hard, raw rock reminiscent of the early 90’s, laden with screaming guitar riffs.

The Parlor Mob and The Dunes get inked

New Jersey band The Parlor Mob rolled into Toronto on February 26 for a two-night stand at Tattoo Rock Parlour before departing on their European tour.  For those of you that have not yet heard the band, they sound like if every band from the '70s had an orgy and The Parlor Mob was their bastard love child.

Virgin Fest celebrated its third year in Toronto as the "go to" festival of the summer.  Featuring 20 bands playing 3 stages, V-Fest had a wide variety of local and international talent spread across two days.  While its impossible to have seen all of the bands, here are some that stood out to TMS on Saturday.
