| CMW Preview: the D’Urbervilles |
|
|
By: Sheena LyonnaisMarch 07, 2010 If there’s a band I can’t go a day without hearing about, it’s the enigmatic fortress that is Toronto’s the D’Urbervilles. Their magical brand of synth induced post indie punk has captured the attention of the nation, allowing them to land gigs with artists such as You Say Party! We Say Die!, Handsome Furs, Land of Talk and Malajube. They are currently working on their follow-up to 2008’s critically acclaimed debut We Are the Hunters. Bassist Kyle Donnelly tells us why we should check them out at CMW. How are you doing and where are you right now? I am doing well. I am sitting in my parents’ basement in Whitby, knitting. There are a lot of bands playing CMW, why should I watch yours? Because we’ll be playing a bunch of new songs and it’s awkward when no one watches you play. What are you doing to prepare for CMW? Doing pilates, getting plenty of sleep, and slamming down wheatgrass and ginger shots. What are you hoping to get out of the festival? An alignment of my chakras. PS I Love U is good for that. Tell me a tour story that is crazy but true. Ray Mitchell, owner of the Family Thrift Store (now Dis-array) in Guelph, lent us his van for our first trip to Pop Montreal. When we went to pick it up from his store, a wise old sage took us aside and said, “Remember: stay out of the rhubarb.” We haven’t touched rhubarb since. What are you/your band working on at the moment? We have just finished recording our second full-length album. It is going to be released in the fall sometime on Out of This Spark. It was once again recorded and produced by the enigmatic Chris Stringer. We are really excited about it. Any last parting words for us music-hungry Toronto folk? Stay out of the rhubarb.
