Brett Caswell and the Marquee Rose By: Sheena Lyonnais
March 08, 2010

Like many of us, singer/songwriter Brett Caswell grew up in the cascades of suburban paradise.  He turned the experience into an acoustic alt-country adventure through despair and departure, a musical memoir of self-discovery-meets-highway-400.  Caswell tells us why we should hit Sneaks this week for more than just badass nachos.

How are you doing and where are you right now?

I’m fantastic!  In Newfoundland at the moment playing a few shows.

There are a lot of bands playing CMW, why should I watch yours?

You should watch our band cause we put on an energetic, passionate, and soulful live show and we’re at the top of our game right now.  The Marquee Rose has gone through some member changes and additions in the last few months, and its the strongest line up yet!

What are you doing to prepare for CMW?

To prepare for CMW, I have pressed some advance promo copies of my new record A New Balance (which is due out in spring) to give out at shows and other events.  We’re also rehearsing our asses off!

What are you hoping to get out of the festival?

Hoping to get make some new fans and get some exposure at CMW.  Also hope to play with, meet, and watch some great bands.

Tell me a tour story that is crazy but true.

No crazy stories yet for this band, but I used to play in a heavy band nine years ago and we got into some trouble.  We played Barrymores in Ottawa and got completely smashed on rye before the show (which we usually did), had three train wrecks during the show where we actually had to stop three different songs cause we couldn’t stop fucking up.

We were a good band too, so we were quite upset about it.  After the show, we proceeded to drink our blues away and ended up trashing the back stage area, got in a yelling match with the venue owners, had to be thrown out of the venue, and were banned from Barrymores for life.  We are much better behaved nowadays!

What are you/your band working on at the moment?

We’re currently working on putting out a new record and playing as many shows as we can.

Any last parting words for us music-hungry Toronto folk?

Buy my new record “A New Balance” when it comes out in spring.  visit me at brettcaswell.com   and look for Brett Caswell & the Marquee Rose live in a city near you!!!!
