The Darcys' self-titled release off Arts & Crafts marks a solid transition for the Toronto band - and 10 gorgeous tracks I can't take off repeat. From the enchanting, violin-laced opener "100 Mile House" straight through to the standout closer "When I Am New Again," the Darcy's have released an album that places them as forerunners of Canadian artistry, and an obvious pick for next year's Polaris Music Prize short-list.

Do you know those haunting places, those places where your dark secrets hide? They're exposed now, through layers of intricate songs bordering sometimes on frantic, like a band on the run. But the Darcys are no such thing. They are the real deal, a hardworking band that managed to turn a record the band once called "a sinking ship" into something beautiful, organic and memorable.

Produced by Dears frontman Murray Lightburn, the Darcys is at once elegant and intricate, a stunning release that blends the ambition of Arcade Fire, the dark undertones of the Stills and even Stars, and the vast layers of Broken Social Scene. The Darcys have persevered despite a history ripe with obstacles and a record that was almost abandoned to create something of pure magic.

A late entry into the best of lists for 2011, but a sure bet none the less. The release party happens this Friday (the 18th) at the Horseshoe. Vinyl will be available and with such lush soundscapes, is highly recommended.
