CD Review: Coal Mine Canaries The Greatest Hits Volume 3 EP Print E-mail
Coal Mine Canaries CD By: Sheena Lyonnais
January 8, 2009

Coal Mine Canaries latest release the Greatest Hits Volume 3 screams high school garage band meets generic bar band, probably not the review they were hoping for since their ages fall somewhere in the middle. "Don't Cry Angel" and "Cheater" are actually pretty guitar driven tracks that probably rock live, yet quickly turn into background music thanks to their passive deliverance on this record.

This seems like a pretty common trait in indie bands – people are simply afraid to let loose in the studio.  The ending result is held-back and afraid with tracks that all sound the same.  I actually prefer 2006's Bad Flavoured Bubblegum Rock.  Not only are the songs stronger, but it also has way more heart.  The beautiful voice of guitarist Rachel Wong is also showcased here, a talent that goes unrecognized on the Greatest Hits Volume 3.

The EP is a miss for this Toronto band.  I'd like to see these songs polished up a bit more, the passion put back into them. They all sound a little too much alike and way too shy, which just doesn't cut it for me. Maybe they're better cut for softer songs, which remain my favourite tracks of previous releases. If these are their greatest hits then I'm sorry but this album doesn't say much.
